Abstract
We studied the feasibility of the rewritable optical disc, which can be played by DVD-ROM player in the extension of the DVD-R system. It resulted the disc whose characteristics are equivalent to those of the DVD-R disc, although its reflectivity is not confirmed to the DVD-ROM single-layer disc specification but to that of the dual-layer disc specification (Rtop≩18%). The disc uses a groove recording method and showed the following characteristics : modulation≩60%, jiter≨8%, the number of direct overwrite cycles≩1000 and data capacity 3.95 GB/side. In addition, the disc is conformed to tracking signal criteria (Δt/T≩0.5) claimed by the DVD-ROM specifications so that it is possible to use the phase detection tracking method. These facts show the feasibility of the rewritable disc having good compatibility with the DVD-ROM system.
