Abstract

The Holographic-Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal(H-PDLC) mode exhibits superb color purity, strong peak reflection efficiency, and the ability to be used in the stacked pixel configuration. The primary weakness of the conventional H-PDLC configuration in the display application is the narrow viewing cone (〜2°) due to its operation as an electrically switchable Bragg reflector. The intent of this work is to present a method and model for increasing the viewing-angle of an H-PDLC display through the recording of a diffuse hologram. The reflection performance(viewing-angle and color) of this approach will be explored using a simple phenomenological model based on coupled-wave theory.
