Abstract
A linear actuator which was constructed with a linear air bearing and a voice coil motor was investigated. The actuator system is suitable for ultra-precise track following and high speed-seeking. This system had resonance frequency two times as high as a conventional rotary type. As the result of servo-tracking by using this actuator with D-MIG head, the tracking system can follow the track at precision within 1/20 track width of the head. Furthermore, the actuator can feed at 10 nm resolution by using an optical fiber displacement sensor.
