Abstract
For improving the transmitted light efficiency, we have theoretically and experimentally studied amorphous and multi-domain LCDs combined with two quarter wave plates. As a result, we obtained that the transmitted light efficiency of a multi-domain vertically aligned(MVA-)LCD panel was improved up to 1.6 times that of a conventional panel. Then we studied on viewing angle characteristic of MVA-LCDs with two quarter wave plates, and found that it is necessary to use negative biaxial compensator for achieving wide-viewing zone. We also show that the further improvement of the efficiency can be achieved by using a cholesteric film and the obtained final improvement in the transmitted light efficiency of the LCD panel was over 2 times that of the conventional panel.
