Abstract

Recently, various kinds of demands for image coding such as flexibility, scalability, reliability are rapidly increased. The co-operative working group of ISO and ITU-T is now under standardizing a new image coding standard as JPEG2000 to comply with these demands. The progressive transmission scheme is one of the requirements in the new coding standard. By implementing this property in the coding scheme, the receiver can get a rough image in the early transmission stage and can understand progressively details of the image as transmission proceeds. In this paper, we propose a new progressive coding scheme from the point of legibility of characters in early transmission stages. In our method, the image signal is decomposed into luminance and chrominance components, and luminance component is transmitted at first, and then chrominance component is encoded by the progressive transmission technique. The simulation results show that our proposed method has high legibility of characters and line drawing parts.
