Abstract
Magnetic and magneto-optical properties of MBE-grown CrPt_3 films were investigated. RHEED observations and XRD patterns suggested that the CrPt_3 grew epitaxially on MgO(111) and Al_2O_3 substrates and had Cu_3Au type ordered structure. The easy axis of magnetization of CrPt_3 on MgO(111) lies in the film plane. On the other hand, CrPt_3 on fused quartz and Al_2O_3(001c), (110c) substrates exhibit large perpendicular anisotropies. The magnetic anisotropy on fused quartz was found to be due to magneto-elastic contribution. The ratio orbital moments which was estimated from r 2p-3d XMCD measurements, was found to be related to the observed perpendicular magnetic anisotropies.
