Abstract
MPEG-4 FGS enables video decoding at variable bit rate scalability, and enables video transmission with high adaptation to bandwidth change on network. However, the bit plane coding method of FGS has the problem that the coding efficiency falls in lower plain. Then, in this paper, we propose a new method for improving the efficiency of the bit plane coding. First, each bit is classified into two groups based on the distribution of significant coefficients. Next, the optimal coding method is applied to each group. Moreover, each information bit is coded in the order which contributes to image quality. Simulation results show that this proposed method is superior to FGS in coding efficiency, and 0.2dB in PSNR.
