Abstract

Aiming at the application to optical interconnection or optical mounting, Diffraction characteristics of a liquid crystal grating based on in-plane switching were studied. The structure is simple, and is an active element with large flexibility. We examined trial manufacture of the sample, evaluation of some characteristics, and asymmetric diffraction characteristics depending on the propagation direction of light. This is due to the asymmetric distribution of liquid crystal directors and the fact that the director distribution varies in the range of the order of a wavelength.
