Abstract
It is well known that the magnetic recording head for HDD (Hard Disk Drive), GMR head for example, is highly sensitive to ESD (Electrostatic discharge). However the categorization of the ESD damage modes in GMR heads has not been discussed in depth so far. This paper gives one suggestion where detailed classification of ESD failure in GMR head is described. This will allow much clearer understanding of ESD damage picture of GMR heads. The paper also reports the actual samples of ESD damages happened at the process of GMR heads or HDD.
