Abstract
The configuration of the suitable recording code for a partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) system in a perpendicular magnetic recording channel with thermal decay is discribed. The relationships between the run-length of recording code and the error frequency in PR1ML system for the newly configured 64/65(0,12/14) and 128/129(0.16/18) codes and the conventional 128/130(0.16/8) code as the run-length-limited (RLL) code are obtained for two kinds of media with different thermal stability. Moreover, the relationships between the elapsed time and the symbol error rate are obtained for these three kinds of codes and their performances are compared. The results show that the 128/129(0,16/18) code gives the best performance for the medium with good thermal stability, and the 64/65(0.12/14) code provides the best performance after a long time for the medium with poor thermal stability.
