Abstract
A fused fiber coupler forming with a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) and a single-mode fiber (SMF) as a solution of their connection method was proposed and was theoretically and experimentally investigated. In the theoretical investigation, it was shown that a power transmission from SMF to PCF in SMF-PCF coupler depends on an air hole collapsed elongation ratio and an SMF diameter in the coupler taper. It was also clarified that the power transmission can be maximized by choosing the air hole collapsed elongation ratio and the SMF diameter properly. A prototype of SMF-PCF coupler was fabricated using CO_2 laser irradiation technique. A power transmission from SMF to PCF in the fabricated coupler was -6.2dB.
