Abstract
In recent years, aerial display has been attracting attention. Aerial imaging by retro-reflection (AIRR) has been proposed to form an aerial information screen. In order to improve the brightness and contrast of the aerial image, reflective polarizer and polarization-modulation film have been introduced to AIRR. It is important for polarization-modulation AIRR (p-AIRR) to use a retro-reflector that performs high reflectance and high polarization-maintenance rate. The purpose of this paper is to select a retro-reflector that is suitable for p-AIRR. We have constructed a measurement system of reflectance of a retro-reflector. This paper reports reflectance characteristics of a variety of state-of-art retroreflectors. We have also constructed optical setups to measure the polarization-maintenance rate of retro-reflector. Then, we have investigated dependences of the reflectance and the polarization-maintenance rate on the incident angles, including rotation and tilt.
