Abstract
The purpose of this study is to report the teaching of translation from English into Japanese in a general English class in a university and examine the effects of it on university students’ translation products. The study used “Tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Albom as a teaching material and carried out seven thirty-minute lessons for teaching translation based on the Text Comprehension Model proposed by Van Dijk and Kintsch (1983). All lessons aimed to develop a pathway to translate from the surface structure of the target language (wayaku) by referring to the context of the text. Findings reveal that students tended to translate tasks by referring to the entire text and produce readable Japanese. These results suggest the teaching of translation may affect students’ translation processes to translate from the surface structure of the text by referring to the context of it.
