Lin Shaohua translated “the man” (8 cases) in Rashomon as “he” (7 cases). But in reading the original, we find that “the man” and “he” are the same person. Why in the text does author Akutagawa Ryunosuke refer to the same person with different words? In other words, what creative intention of the author does “the man” express? What role does it play in the work? On the other hand, in Lin Shaohua’s translation, what kind of literary effect does “the man” translated into “he” have? In order to solve these problems, this paper will try to use the narrative analysis approach to this translation phenomenon.
