Abstract
This paper attempts to demonstrate how a change of subjects within or across sentence boundaries in English texts can be a threat to the cohesion of their Japanese translations and explores strategies that skilled translators employ to reduce it. To do so, it first examines the way cohesion is achieved in Japanese text, contrasts it with cohesion in English and tries to establish that different degrees of subjectivity with which speakers (or writers) of the two languages tend to construe a particular entity or situation are the ultimate cause of such a threat.
