Magnets for the retention of a sectional maxillary prosthesis: a case report

Abstract

Clinical observation was made for a patient who had complete maxillectomy and wearing a sectional prosthesis using samarium-cobalt magnets for obtaining retention.

The following result can be made according to the clinical observation after wearing prosthesis.

1. It was easily to insert a sectional prosthesis and obturator was to improve the speech function remarkably.

2. Complete denture could be made in usual manner and was useful to the mitigate patients psychological being caused by、characteristic from of maxillary prosthesis.

3. Samarium-cobalt magnet was effective for retaining the prosthesis of obturator and complete upper denture. However, protecting the rust of magnet was questionable whereas in the oral cavity.
