Nurses with characteristics of developmental disorders have been reported to experience difficulties in adapting to their work environment. However, appropriate support strategies for their job adaptation remain unclear. This study explored the support provided by Certified Nurse Specialist in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing (CNS) to nurses with characteristics of developmental disorders. A qualitative inductive analysis was conducted on data from semi-structured interviews with ten CNSs. The analysis yielded four core categories:(1) opportunities for intervention and emerging issues,(2) multifaceted assessment by CNSs (3) a comprehensive support approach undertaken by CNSs, and (4) outcomes and limitations of CNSs-led support. CNSs approached cases from multiple perspectives, providing direct care, consulting with educators and managers, and coordinating organizational support, including within nursing departments. Their goal was to achieve optimal outcomes through comprehensive and integrative approaches. However, limitations in job adaptation persisted. The findings highlight the need for career development support systems that enable nurses with developmental disorders understand their specific weaknesses and choose suitable nursing fields. Furthermore, a shift in employer attitudes-away from expecting nurses to perform as all-rounders-is essential.
