Abstract

By investigating artists’ activities in the field of contemporary art , this study examined the probability of female artists leaving, which tends to be high in the process of engagement in their professional activities and continuing their career development. The results of the survey revealed a situation wherein those who “devoted to art” (Abbing, 2002=2007) were able to advance their careers, showing selectivity in the process. Furthermore, we noted that there are subjective time limits for the transition from a novice to a mid-career female artist, and that they face two major barriers to career continuity.
