Abstract

This study examined the factors that enable the long-term sustainability of traditional crafts by analyzing broadcast archives, and the transformations of traditional crafts after approximately 50 years. They can be categorized into five types as follows: (1) preservation as cultural properties, (2) creation as artists, (3) tourism, (4) engagement through lessons and hands-on experiences, and (4) industries contributing to local economies. The analysis revealed that many crafts were developed by simultaneously spanning multiple categories. The study also identifies three underlying factors that support the long-term sustainability of traditional crafts, which are (1) the role of public research institutes in technological development, (2) business succession, and (3) the importance of securing raw materials and production tools.
