In this short reflective piece, I explore the fundamental question of why we do language education research. With close reference to my own subfield of inquiry (motivation) within language education research, I highlight the academic values and purposes that shape our work, and I develop the case that we should give more priority to the social values and purposes that our research should have. I discuss what taking a more socially responsive approach to researching language education may entail in terms of how we frame our research questions and our relationships with the people involved in our research.
