Abstract

During the 2023 Japan Association for College and University Education roundtable on the call for “social change”-oriented leadership development education that examines systemic social oppression around leadership, the participants addressed the issue of socialized bias on leadership and gender among students as well as faculty and staff.

In response to this, the 2024 roundtable session aimed at: 1) providing an overview of “Culturally Responsive Leadership Learning” (CRLL); 2) presenting the impact of mother-daughter relationships and regional/cultural differences on studentsʼ identity development; 3) examining the influence of sociocultural factors on leadership development through quantitative studies; 4) discussing possible educational research that fosters deeper leadership identity development; and 5) exploring a studentʼs narrative to examine steps toward liberation from such cultural constraints. The participants engaged in a dialogue on leadership development for authentic self-expression.
