Abstract

ABSTRACT:The necessity of mODal shift has been emphasized to solve the various problems caused by trucktransportation such as air pollution and future lack of workers by declining birthrate. It is said that ferry lines can play aprincipal role in mODal shift policy on account of their easy intermODal transportation services. However, ferry lines in theSeto Inland Sea have been put in very difficult situation lately because of opening the Honshu-Shikoku ConnectionBridges and arguments about reduction in toll of the expressways and the Honshu-Shikoku Connection Bridges.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze a mODal shift by using ferry lines of the cargos which is transported bytrucks between Shikoku and other regions. From this result, it is indicated that lot-size is an important route choice factorto truck transportation cargo and making lot-size larger promotes mODal shift by using ferry lines.
