Abstract
We retrospectively reviewed 165 patients over 80 years old, who had undergone emergency abdominal surgery at our hospital between April 2003 and March 2009, and investigated the occurrence of the surgical site infection (SSI). The incidence of incisional SSI and organ/space SSI was 40 cases (24%), and the incidence of only incisional SSI was 32 cases (19%). The patients' group of incisional SSI and organ/space SSI had higher serum urea nitrogen and serum creatinine, lower serum albumin, and a higher rate of ostomy procedures. The patients' group of only incisional SSI had higher serum urea nitrogen and serum creatinine, and a higher rate of ostomy procedures and colorectal surgery. The independent risk factor of total SSI and only incisional SSI was the ostomy procedure (Odds ratios 2.975 and 5.559, respectively). We should consider the higher occurrence rate of SSI, if an ostomy procedure is to be performed.
