Abstract
We analyzed the clinical course of appendectomy for acute appendicitis by patient generation. We enrolled 224 patients with acute appendicitis who underwent an appendectomy from 2005 to 2009. Patients were subsequently divided into three groups by age. The first group consisted of patients of 15 years of age or younger. The second group was aged between 16 and 69 years. The third group was 70 years of age or older. The patients in the oldest group were more likely to come to the hospital two days or more after onset of symptoms with a progressed state of appendicitis at the time of surgery. The patients in the youngest group had a tendency to be misdiagnosed at the first medical assessment. However, they had less probability of having a gangrenous change in resected appendix and had fewer postoperative complications.
