When unsealed 85Kr β-irradiation facilities are used for chemical reactions in liquid phase, the 85Kr gas must be removed from the reaction system after irradiation, and the radioactive concentration reduced to a level below (MPC)w. Removal experiments were carried out with water and with an aqueous solution of polyacrylamide using a reaction vessels of 1l capacty containing a 85Kr radiation source of 290Ci. The methods of removal and the results obtained therewith are discussed.
The removal is accomplished by the combined use of freeze-pump-thaw cycles, N2-stripping and standing at room temperature. The overall decontamination factor reaches 108.
