Radiation monitoring must has been following characters with be enough its an object. (1) Detectable sensitivity, (2) Energy dependences, (3) Direction characteristics, (4) Stability and durability for all weather, (5) Temperature and atmospheric dependences.
Since, sensitivity of radiation monitor has been enough to detected of the dose limit (500 mrem/yr) and irregularly effluent release. But recent, there was necessary more than low level sensitivity to be “as low as practicable” that recomendation from ICRP.
The Japan Atomic Energy Commission was decided “dose objectives in environment of light water power reactor” at May 13, 1975, conform to the report of committee on environment and safety. Thus, the object of environmental radiation monitoring includes “as low as practicable”.
Numerical values for the “dose objectives” are amount to 5 mrem/yr (total body) and 15 mrem/yr (thyroid) received from both radioactive gaseous and liquid effluents by an individual in the critical groups.
That is about 0.5 μR/hr, there were smaller than deviation of natural radiation back ground.
This report was description on technical standardization for measurement of low level radiation in environment.
