For the continuous separation of lithium isotopes, a new apparatus has been constructed and operated. In the apparatus the vertical effect of ion exchange chromatography and horizontal effect of ionic electromigration have been combined. A small amount of enriched 6Li was eluted from compartment-2 (the compartment next to the cathode chamber) and a many amount of slightly enriched 7Li was eluted from compartment-12 (the compartment next to anode chamber).
The ratio of the countercurrent influx of hydrogen ion to the total efflux of lithium ion, R, is a good index for optimizing the operation conditions. If the value of R is less than 0.93, the lithium band in the apparatus moved from the anode side to the cathode side. The apparatus has been operated during 136 days setting the R value between 0.93 and 0.95, and the content of 6Li in lithium chloride obtained from compartment-2 was proved to increase day by day and reached from 7.58 to 8.34 mol/o.
