Ion exchange membranes have been made using electron beam radiation. An NS type electron generator (1.5 MeV, 3 mA) was used for cross linking ethylenepropylene rubber, a base material. It was also used for graft polymerization of the monomer, (stylene and divinyl benzene for cation membranes and divinyl pyridine for anion membranes) to the base material.
The characteristics of these ion exchange membranes, such as the graft ratio, the ion selective permeability and the membrane resistivity were measured.
It was shown that an ion excange membrane with an ion selective permeability of 0.9 and membrane resistivity of 10 Ω-cm2 may be fabricated by the present method.
