Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) designed and constructed a new β-γ hot laboratory in Tokai-mura, Ibaraki-ken in 1972 for post-irradiation examination of structural material from operating PWR plants. There are one concrete cell (max. capacity of 100 Ci, 60Co), seven lead (partially steel) cells and several supporting laboratories. MHI hot laboratory has been particularly equipped for surveillance test on reactor pressure vessel, however, wide variety of activities including radiochemical experiments and charcoal filter testing are available.
Nippon Nuclear Fuel Development Co., Ltd. (NFD) designed and constructed a new β-γ hot laboratory in Oarai-machi, Ibaraki-ken in 1976. There are two pools, seven concrete cells (max. capacity of 106Ci, 1 MeV γ-source), three steel cells, an isolation area and several supporting laboratories. Special attention was paid to the NFD hot laboratory having the capability to load and handle a full BWR fuel assembly. The laboratory has been equipped with many special instruments including a spent fuel shipping cask. After careful preparatory work, two BWR fuel assemblies were accepted in 1979 and being examined well as expected.
