It has been recognized that plant diagnostic techniques are important in order to achieve safety and effective operation of nuclear power plants. Here a preliminary study was conducted on applicability of fuzzy reasoning based on modus tollens to diagnostic techniques, It involved a trial to ascertain whether a technique proposed by Tsukamoto was effective or not to the identification of leaking locations in the coolant pipes inside the dry-well of a BWR plant. An additional conditional proposition was introduced to a basic set of fuzzy propositions which represented the relationship between causes and symptoms so that the proposed technique was improved. Several numerical tests were carried out on the minicomputer PRIME 750 in order to examine whether an additional proposition worked as a reinforcement to this diagnostic technique or not. This result led to the finding that the reliability of the present algorithm could be improved by incorporating the additional procedure.
