The proving test on reliability of the current PWR fuel assembly was executed by Nuclear Power Engineering Test Center under the sponsorship of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry in the period of fiscal year 1977 to 1986. Ten monitoring fuel assemblies were randomly selected from those of the nuclear power plant Mihama Unit 3 Reactor. After taking a lot of detailed manufacturing data, these assemblies were irradiated in the reactor from the 2 nd to 4 th reactor operating cycle without any anomaly. After each operating cycle, all these assemblies were inspected at the reactor site, among which one assembly at each cycle was submitted to post-irradiation examination.
The comprehensive evaluation through all the results from their inspection and postirradiation examination concluded that the proving test was completed to demonstrate the integrity of the current PWR assembly, to verify the appropriateness for the fuel design and manufacturing and to provide a lot of highly reliable data base in quality.
