This paper is a sequel to the practical report on the hybrid English language program that involves a short-term intensive course in the Philippines, coupled with preliminary online lessons (Yokogawa, 2018). The program evolved to an elective course in 2018, and was implemented as one of the most favored short-term study abroad programs of Meiji University until the spring of 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the hybrid English language program had to be transformed into a fully online-based study abroad course, which was successfully conducted in the spring and in the summer of 2021. The purpose of this paper is to describe how the program has accommodated the needs of Japanese university students who would like to develop their speaking proficiency in a short-term elective course, and was implemented online in 2021 under the travel restrictions imposed by the Japanese government. First, the context behind development of the program is outlined. Next, the curriculum design of the program is outlined. Then, the process of transforming the program into a three-week online course is described. The paper concludes with discussions on the significance of online study abroad experience and the future perspectives of the reorganized English language program.
