Success factors regarding the profit improvement for public hospitals mainly providing acute medcal care services were verified through the analyses of the factors relating to the longitudinal change before and after the public hospital reform between the year of 2005 and 2015.
A multiple linear regression analysis was conducted with hospitals (n=589) by size of the total number of beds. Dependent variable was the change in the ratio of the hospital profit while its independent variables were the change in the number of patients and their unit price, the occupancy ratio, average length of stay, the costs and the asset situation.
It was confirmed that the change in the hospitals' profitability and the related factors difered by the size of their beds. Meanwhile, with the change in the balance, significant results were shown for all the hospital groups regardless of their size of registered beds in terms of the annual number of discharged patients, the daily number of outpatients, the unit price for inpatients, the unit price for outpatients, the occupancy ratio of beds, the average length of stay, depreciation costs, and the amount of building assets per registered bed. In the meantime, the correlation between the balance and the change in the salaries for their staff members and material costs making up a significant proportion in their total costs was not necessarily significant.
