Abstract

BACKGROUND : Side effects of coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines have been investigated. However, their impact on the daily lives of patients receiving home medical care is obscure.

OBJECTIVES : To evaluate the impact of COVID-19 vaccination side effects on the daily lives of patients receiving home medical care.

METHODS : This multi-institutional time series study involved 256 patients scheduled to receive the second COVID-19 vaccine dose between August and September 2021 and to undergo medical examination between September and October 2021. We performed a questionnaire survey of the localized symptoms at the vaccination site, pain located away from the vaccination site, fever, general fatigue, and appetite loss after the first and second shots. We compared each symptom before and after vaccination. Patients who had cancelled vaccination or medical examination were excluded from the questionnaire survey. Only descriptive analyses were conducted.

RESULTS : After excluding 21 patients, we enrolled 235 patients, eight of whom developed adverse events. The first and second shots impacted the daily lives of 4.1% and 5.5% of the patients, respectively. No medical intervention was required. The incidences of fever and fatigue increased after the second shot compared to before vaccination. Youth, low nursing level, and side effects from the first shot were correlated with side effects from the second shot. Adverse events did not affect the subjects’ daily lives.

CONCLUSIONS : Side effects of COVID-19 vaccination did not impact the daily life of patients receiving home medical care.
