Abstract

[Purpose] To conduct an interview survey on conversation practices as psychological support for patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

[Method] An interview survey was conducted with Mrs. A, an occupational therapist. For analysis, an open coding method was used to extract and conceptualize characteristic narratives.

[Results] Five concepts were extracted : 1) Identifying the state of the family’s acceptance of the disability and providing support,) Viewing death positively, 3) Facing the topic of death head-on, 4) Understanding thoughts during the period when articulation function is maintained, and 5) Taking an interest in the patient throughout the interaction.

[Discussion] The findings indicate that multiple factors should be considered when practicing conversation as psychological support for patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
