We performed the selective extraction of glucose with ion-pair extractant, phenylboronate anion and quaternary ammonium cation. Phenyl boronate plays the role of recognition site for the polyol group, and quaternary ammonium is the lipophilic counter cation to suppress the solubilization of phenyl boronate to the aqueous phase. Glucose was extracted efficiently using the organic phase containing the ion-pair extractant in a high pH region. However, the extractabilities of 1-methyl- α-D-glycoside, fructose and galactose were significantly lower than that of glucose. These results did not correspond with the stability of the saccharide-boronate complex in an aqueous phase. The experimental result on the D-glucose extraction was sufficiently quantitatively explained by the model of the glucose-boronate complex with 1: 1 stoichiometry.
