Industrial waste usually contains a fraction of metal elements within it. Yet, it is still common today that the industrial wastes are freely disposed to the nature. It contaminates the environment. This research synthesize chitosan derivative compound and investigate the characteristic of its adsorption to the Cu (II) and Cr (III) ion. This is an experimental research, begins with chitosan synthesis process, and follows by the investigation of the ability of the chitosan to adsorb metal ion within the industrial waste. Chitosan is made of maleic anhydride in a homogenous solution of 5% acetate acid. Molecular structure of this modified compound is characterized by FTIR. Further, the adsorption characteristic of chitin, chitosan, and modified chitosan is measured. The result shows that the best chemical compound to adsorb Cu (II) and Cr (III) is maleic chitosan, with the adsorption value of 20%. The research implies that maleic chitosan can be used as a controller of metal-containing, such as Cu and Cr, industrial wastes.
