Local govenments in the United States operate under many different structures. Political scientists, public administrators, and elected officials have debated the relative merits of these various structural forms for years, but the outcome of these debates isn't definitive. Each of the various forms still has its strong supporters and vehement opponents. There are four basic forms of local government in the United States:1.
