Using a virtual private network (VPN) as a means of communication, we have established a PHS data communication system in a medical information sharing system for regional medical care. The system has the advantages of installation, mobility, maintenance and running cost comparing with wire communications including ISDN. As mobile communications are vulnerable to tapping, we encrypted VPN communications, but the communication speed slowed only 5.7% that was of no particular problem to the clinical use. Amid rapid changes in the communication technology, PHS data communications are thought to be operative as a means of communication for medical information that requires security.
