Abstract
Severe damage will occur in the near future in an inevitable Nankai Trough earthquake. The working group of the Cabinet Office of the Government of Japan reported damage resulting from Nankai Trough earthquake from August 2012 to May 2013. We constructed a database to include every hospitals in Japan, and, according to the data of the cabinet office, we estimated damage to hospitals and prepared a practical DMAT rescue plan. The Regional Bureau of Health and Welfare provided the hospital list, and we added information to the database about location and altitude provided by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and the detailed information about disaster base hospitals.
Based on information from the cabinet office, we calculated that 257,000 beds (21% of the total number of beds in the stricken area) would be lost. There were 1,249 DMAT teams in April 2014 in Japan, but we estimate, that at least 1,364 DMAT will be necessary to rescue the victims of a Nankai Trough earthquake.
