Owing to the combination of surgery and neoadjuvant therapy, the survival rate of head and neck cancer patients has remarkably improved. However, there are many patients who can not come to hospital by themselves because of their systemic disorders.
In this paper, we report a case of fabrication of a dento-maxillary prosthesis and delivery of professional oral care by home-visit dental service. A 79-year-old male had undergone hemi-total maxillectomy due to maxillary sinus carcinoma and had difficulty in walking because of amputation of toes due to necrosis caused by diabetes. Owing to the maxillectomy, he had speech, swallowing, and mastication disorders. We fabricated a maxillofacial prosthesis in the conventional way at his house. Each time we visited, a dental hygienist performed oral care. Proper functions such as speech, mastication, swallowing and aesthetics were established with the dento-maxillary prosthesis. He now remains in good condition without caries, periodontitis or aspiration pneumonia. Because the number of maxillofacial patients who cannot go to hospital by themselves is expected to increase, it is necessary to strengthen the cooperation between various occupational categories and to develop maxillofacial prosthodontists who can provide home-visit medical services.
