The crisis of Korean economy has been driven by both the external and internal factors. The external factors came from global financial sectors, while the internal factors are mainly focused on various kinds of problem from chaebols, government and financial sectors, as well as Confucian ways of thinking. Among others Korean chaebols are the one whose problems are the center of the debates on the cause of the crisis and the prescriptions for it.
In principles, the proper are on internal factors, i.e. chaebols and government.
It is more important to prepare to an ideal blueprint or vision, considering the macro and international environment for the 21st century as well as the unique situations for Korean economy, rather than suggesting the simple binomial approach which the causing factors of the crisis either from government or chaebols, or just taking temporary actions. For example, strong voice of the market principles for chaebols problem may cause the component parts and basic material industries recommended by IMF could be modified according to American strategies and in the long run this situation may cause Korean industry’s competitiveness to decline.
