We encountered a rare case of liver echinococcosis in a Bolivian woman in her 20s living in the Chubu region of Japan. Because of fever and general fatigue, she visited a nearby hospital and was suspected of having a liver abscess following an abdominal CT scan. The patient was referred to our hospital for detailed examination and treatment. A 45-mm-size monocystic lesion with thick film formation was discovered at the S4/S8 boundary and was aspirated under ultrasonic guidance. Clinical microscopic and cytologic examinations were performed, and scolex and hooks were found. The patient was diagnosed as having liver echinococcosis. She came to Japan from Bolivia two years ago. In Bolivia, many wild cats and dogs live near residential areas, and it is a region where echinococcosis occurs frequently. The patient might be infected with liver echinococcosis while she was in Bolivia.
