Abstract

〔Aims〕 The purpose of this study is to clarify the relationship between the sense of coherence (SOC) and mental health status, physical symptoms, life situations and social situations, and the changes of these items of nursing students before and during 3 weeks of the clinical practice of adult nursing.

〔Methods〕 A questionnaire survey was given to nursing students undertaking clinical practice of adult nursing. We examined the SOC (SOC-13, Japanese version), mental health status (GHQ-12, Japanese version), physical symptoms, life situations and social situations before and weeks 1, 2 and 3 of the clinical practice.

〔Results〕The 92 participants were analyzed. No significant differences were found in the SOC before and during 3 weeks of the clinical practice. For all measuring points, the SOC was strongly and negatively correlated with GHQ-12 and positively with social situation. It was negatively correlated with physical symptoms during the weeks 1−3 of the clinical practice, and positively correlated with life situation during the weeks 2−3.

〔Conclusions〕 It was revealed that the relationship between the SOC and mental health status, physical symptoms, life situations and social situations in nursing students who had been taking clinical practice. This suggests that even in the stressful clinical practice, students who could manage their stress is able to maintain their regular lifestyles and physical conditions, and receive supports from others while going through the clinical practice.
