Abstract

〔Purpose〕This research aims to clarify how nursing students' unfamiliarity with older adults' language affect their emotional situations when they communicate with them and their communication skills in order to gain educational insight on the method of effective communication with them.

〔Methods〕Iconducted an anonymous, self-administered questionnaire survey of 547 nursing students, among which 392 questionnaires (71.7%) were returned and 358 were used for analysis. Three measurement instruments were used for analysis: 50 words that have intergenerational differences, a questionnaire examining nursing students' emotional situations when they communicate with older adults, and an existing communication skills scale.

〔Results〕Students who had failed to understand what older adults were talking about tended to get a low score of the words with intergenerational differences. There was also negative correlation with the communication skills scale when their emotional conditions were negative.

〔Discussion〕 The score of the words with intergenerational differences declined due to the change of intergenerational exchange and communication methods. It is desirable that nursing students understand what older adults talk for good communication.
