Educational Support Recognized by Assistant Head Nurses as Necessary for Role Performance

Abstract

〔Aims〕 The principal aims of the present study were to elucidate educational support recognized by assistant head nurses as necessary for role performance and examine educational support systems for them.

〔Methods〕 We conducted semi-structured interviews with assistant head nurses who were working at three facilities and inductively analyzed support for role performance that is recognized by assistant head nurses as necessary.

〔Results〕 The study participants comprised 26 assistant head nurses.The educational support recognized by assistant head nurses as necessary was as follows: 《experience before the promotion useful after promotion》, 《education before the promotion as next assistant head nurse》. After the promotion, there were《educational involvement with head nurse》, 《educational relationship between assistant head nurse》, 《participation in training that can be learned》 and 《education expected after promotion》.

〔Conclusions〕 Educational support for assistant head nurses is necessary before the promotion for a smooth career transition from mid-career staff to assistant head nurses.After the promotion,it is necessary to incorporate the attitude of learning autonomously on the premise that assistant head nurses is an adult learner.
