Aim: To elucidate the support of visiting nurses focused on the future for mothers of early-middle-aged severely disabled persons.
Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted on five visiting nurses regarding their support for mothers of severely disabled persons. The results were qualitatively and descriptively analyzed.
Results: The interviews identified the following five categories regarding the support of visiting nurses focused on the future: “Respect for the parent-child life built by the mother”, “Finding ways for the mother to entrust her caregiving responsibilities for her child to other people”, “Continuously offering a helping hand to accompany patiently until the mother accepts”, “Laying the foundation to support caregiving for the child in preparation of family transitions”, and “Carefully watching the status of the mother and child as they grow older, and stepping in to provide support without missing any opportunities”.
Conclusion: In the support of visiting nurses focused on the future for mothers of early-middle-aged severely disabled persons, it is important to support both the parent-child life valued by the mother and the mother’s aging, as well as to provide assistance by “Carefully watching the status of the mother and child as they grow older, and stepping in to provide support without missing any opportunities”.
