Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to develop the Japanese version of the Forensic Psychiatric Nursing Competence (FPNC) scale.

Method: The original FPNC scale was developed in the UK and modified in Ireland. We translated the 40-item scale into Japanese following the procedure of the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) guideline. We conducted a pilot test with four nurses with experience of working in the Medical Treatment and Supervision Act (MTSA) ward to assess the comprehensibility, relevance, and comprehensiveness of the items of the Japanese version of the FPNC scale.

Results: The participants pointed out difficulties of comprehensibility in 12 items and irrelevance of wording in five items. No items needed revision for comprehensiveness. Revisions to the items were discussed in accordance with the results of the focus group interview, and the Japanese version of the FPNC scale was finalized.

Conclusion: We carried out the translation process according to COSMIN, and developed the Japanese translation version of FPNC.
