Objective: We developed a Program of End-of-life care for home visiting Nurses Training-Trainer (PENUT-T) and examined its effectiveness.
Methods: The PENUT-T is a 1-day program of lectures and exercises. A before-and-after comparative study was conducted with 39 home visiting nurses. We collected responses regarding rubric, the Self-Assessment Facilitator Functions Scale, the End-of-Life Nursing Education Questionnaire, and the perceived feasibility of organizing the PENUT course using a questionnaire survey.
Results: The results revealed significant improvements in “Understanding of the facilitator’s role in role play” as rubric (2.8 ± 1.0, 3.6 ± 0.7), “Efficacy in structuring and facilitating” in the Self-Assessment Facilitator Functions Scale (23.2 ± 5.3, 24.5 ± 4.7), and “Preparation to lead initiatives in end-of-life care” in the End-of-Life Nursing Education Questionnaire (3.0 ± 0.8, 3.3 ± 0.8). Nine respondents reported that they felt able to organize the PENUT course in their community immediately after completing the PENUT-T.
Conclusion: The PENUT-T enhanced self-efficacy for facilitating the PENUT and holding PENUT courses. However, enabling PENUT-T graduates to implement PENUT courses in their communities should be examined in future studies.
