Aim: This study aimed to develop a Japanese version of the Nurses’ Workplace Scale and evaluate its validity and reliability.
Methods: The original 12-item Nurses Workplace Scale was translated into Japanese. Responses from 306 nurses obtained through a web-based survey were analyzed using item, Cronbach’s alpha and confirmatory factor analyses. Test-retest reliability was assessed using retest data from 214 nurses by calculating weighted kappa coefficients, and intraclass correlation coefficients, and performing Bland-Altman analysis.
Results: The model comparison indicated an eight-item, two-factor structure. Confirmatory factor analyses demonstrated a good model fit (CFI = .989, RMSEA = .023, SRMR = .043). Internal consistency was acceptable (α = .67), and reliability was supported by a weighted kappa of .52 (p < .001) and an intraclass correlation coefficient (1, 2) of .51 (95% CI [.41, .60]). The Bland-Altman test showed no significant differences.
Conclusion: The Japanese version of the Nurses’ Workplace Scale showed acceptable validity and reliability, supporting its use in assessing the oppression experienced by Japanese nurses.
